Year-round parasite prevention is essential to protect your pet from internal & external parasites.

They may not always be visible to the naked eye, but parasites are always on the prowl. A parasitic infestation can not only leave your furry friend uncomfortable, but can also pose serious health risks for all of your family. If left untreated, parasites can cause serious illnesses such as Lyme disease, or other tick-borne diseases. Some parasites are zoonotic which means they can be transmitted to other species such as humans. To reduce the risk of infection it is best to prevent and treat all parasites in your pets.

Is hair loss a sign that my pet has parasites?

Yes, pets who suffer from mange and worms could lose their hair. Other signs you can look for in your pet are:

  • Red bumps
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swollen belly
  • Brown or black buildup in ears
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Protruding lumps
  • Persistent itching or scratching

What can I do to protect my pet from parasites?

At Elmwood Veterinary Hospital, we recommend a year-round prevention plan. The surroundings and lifestyle of your pet can leave them exposed to parasites at any time and so we highly recommend that all pets are on a prevention plan.

I have an indoor pet; do they still need parasite protection?

Yes! Even if your pet doesn’t go outside, they can still get parasites from other animals that they interact with or even humans. Another reason is that some parasites can live within the home especially during winter months.
